First of seven Remote Handling Cask Delivered to ESS

20.02.25 – Asturfeito has successfully delivered the first of seven remote handling casks for ESS, ensuring safe and efficient transport of irradiated components within the facility.

We are proud to announce that ASTURFEITO has successfully completed a significant milestone of a challenging on-going project, the delivery of the first of seven remote handling casks for ESS (European Spallation Source).

This facility, located in Lund (Sweden) and currently in advance phase of construction, is designed to be the most powerful neutron source in the world once in operation.

Asturfeito scope covers the production engineering, manufacturing, assembly, integration, factory & site acceptance tests and cold commissioning of the casks together with several gamma gates and other radiation shielding and ancillary equipment. All these items will be an essential part of the remote handling operations to ensure the safe transport of irradiated components from the Target Monolith, the heart of the facility where the spallation takes place, to other areas for maintenance, replacement or disposal.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire Asturfeito team involved in this project, in-kind partner HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research, European Spallation Source ERIC and to our sub-suppliers for the great team effort to successfully achieve this first delivery.

This project has been partially funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, through the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
